OUTDOORS, THINGS TO DO

STROLLING DOWN THE BOULEVARD IN PROVIDENCE, RI

Tori Trogani - October 29, 2015

It officially feels like fall!

I always get very excited when the leaves start changing. It means I can pull out my autumn wardrobe and start wearing my cozy sweaters and my embarrassingly large collection of boots. It means hot cider, pumpkin spice lattes, and hot chocolate with nutmeg and cinnamon. It means Halloween and Thanksgiving (and that Christmas is quickly approaching). It means it’s the season for my all-time favorite smell: chimney smoke on crisp, cold air. And, of course, it also means gorgeous, colorful trees.

IMG_2108 copyEvery year, without fail, I am blown away by the beauty of fall color and this year in particular has been extraordinarily colorful. So, we decided to enjoy it the best way we know how with a stroll down Blackstone Boulevard.

For any history nerds like me, it might interest you to know that it was designed by a prominent landscape architect named Horace W.S. Cleveland who hailed from Chicago and also designed other prominent Rhode Island landmarks like Roger Williams Park. When it was complete in 1894, the Boulevard immediately became a popular place for drives, promenades, even horse races (can we bring those back?), and at one point was also part of the Butler Avenue trolley line.

Although they don’t have horse races or trolleys anymore (more’s the pity), nowadays the Boulevard plays host to walkers, runners, and bicyclists of all ages and is still a lovely place for a drive. When we lived in Providence, we used to come here to walk our dog all the time (you’ll see many a pooch trotting down the path when you come here). It’s a beautiful place to visit any time of the year, but Blackstone Boulevard really shines in the fall.

Or, if its a warm day, you could go for a scoop of their delicious ice cream. I mean you’re going for a stroll, right? That’s exercise. You deserve it.

While you’re there, also be sure to check out Lippitt Memorial Park right across the street where they hold the Hope Street Farmer’s Market from May through October.
